Lady GaGa is to receive an award from a gay organisation in recognition of her work to inspire gay youth.

The 'Marry the Night' singer will be honoured with the 'Trevor Hero Award' at the Trevor Live event in the Hollywood Palladium on December 4.

The event will also see performances from Mary J. Blige and Queen Latifah. Google Inc. will also be awarded for its work with young gay people.

The Trevor Project's CEO David McFarland said: "Our young people are at the centre of a health crisis, and vocal leaders like Lady GaGa and technology leaders like Google Inc. have stepped up to help change our culture.

"Our honourees are working with the Trevor Project to make a better today and a brighter tomorrow for youth. We are proud to honour Lady GaGa with the 'Trevor Hero Award' and Google Inc. with the 'Trevor 2020' award for their work to help young people express their true selves with pride."

Lady GaGa launched the Born This Way Foundation earlier this month, which aims to abolish intolerance of individuality, embrace humanity and build "a brave new world".
