Lady Gaga has come under fire from animal rights group PETA after she was photographed in a series of fur coats.

The 'Born This Way' singer had previously been praised by the organisation after she said in 2009 on the Ellen DeGeneres Show "I hate fur and I don't wear fur". However, over the past couple of weeks, she has been seen out in a number of different fur coats, leading PETA to label her a "turncoat" and compare her to "the mindless Kim Kardashian".

In a letter published on the group's website, Dan Matthews, the organisation's senior vice president compared their fight for increased animal rights to the gay community's past struggles against persecution and said the singer risked alienating her fanbase.

He wrote: "Many of your gay fans, have long admired what you told Ellen: "I hate fur and I don't wear fur." But these recent photos of you in fox and rabbit and with a wolf carcass make it appear that you have amnesia. What happened? Are your stylists telling you that it's fake, or are you a turncoat?"

He continued: "Many gays are animal advocates because we recognize that the same arrogance and indifference that some have toward animal suffering has at times been directed toward us personally because of our orientation. But by wearing those dumb furs in a heat wave, you're making yourself a target just like the mindless Kim Kardashian."

The singer took to Twitter to respond and seemed in no mood to apologise, simply writing: "For those press and such who are w! riting about whether or not my fur is actually real, please don't forget to credit the designer Hermes. Thank You!"

Lady Gaga isn't the first singer to incur the wrath of PETA in recent months. The organisation had previously said that Noel Gallagher "needs empathy counselling" and accused Rihanna of "exploting birds for her dubious looks".
