The singer called the video "An autobiographical film recounting my past, revealing my struggles + love for showbiz," in a Tweet shortly after it premiered online.
In an interview with E! Online, Gaga said the video is based on her experience being dropped by her first label, Island Def Jam.
"It was one of the worst days of my life and it happened quite quickly, but in my mind, when I think back on that period of my life, it all happened very slow," she said. "If you give up after something like that, you were never destined to be an entertainer."
There's a scene in the video where Lady Gaga, who directed the video herself, has an emotional break down while nearly naked. She thrashes around a room pouring cereal all over herself, dyes her hair blue and sulks in a bath tub.
"Well, I was naked in real life when it happened," she told the news site about when she found out she was dropped."That's probably the most honest moment in that video of everything I've ever done. My directorial decision was for them to just [expletive] roll the cameras, because I couldn't go in and out of the moment."
The 25-year-old singer was nominated for three Grammy Awards on Wednesday. Check out the video for "Marry the Night" below. Warning: Video contains explicit images.
